Brief History of the District

Adilabad district in Telangana is named after the ruler of Bijapur, Mohammed Adil Shah. The district is second largest in terms of forest coverage, next only to Khammam in the state. The administrative headquarters of the district is Adilabad town.

The region was ruled by the Mauryas, the Mughals, Satavahanas and the Chalukyas.

The district is surrounded by Nizamabad and Karimnagar districts in south; Maharashtra state borders rest of the districts. Even though Adilabad has multicultural society, the significant cultures in the district are Telugu and neighbouring Marathi.

The district is famous for the Saraswathi temple at Basar, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every day for Akshrabhyasa of their children. The district gathers lakhs of tribals at Keslapur for the Jatra. It has historic Jama Masjid near Badi market.

The district is home to several tourist places like Kuntala and Pochera Falls. It has several wildlife sanctuaries namely Kawal, Shivaram and Pranahitha. Adilabad is famous for craft works like Dhokra casting and toy making.

The Godavari and the Penganga rivers flow through the district. Adilabad is a hub for cotton mills. In 2006, the Indian government has declared Adilabad as the most backward districts in the country (total 250 backward districts). The region receives funds under the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF) for development works.

The native language of Adilabad is Urdu, while Telugu is the official Language. The other languages spoken in the district are Gormati and Marathi.

The district faces Naxal issue and falls under the Naxal-Maoist insurgency red corridor region.
